The Story Behind BaseLegs
Meet Alex: Pilot | Runner | Creator
As a pilot in the business aviation sector, currently flying the Cessna Citation XLS+, I am no stranger to living out of a suitcase. But no matter where I touch down, there is one thing that always makes it into my luggage: my running shoes.
I have been a runner for over 30 years and have completed two full marathons. For me, running is the perfect counterweight to the high-concentration environment of the flightdeck and the most effective remedy for jet lag. However, during countless layovers, I faced the same recurring frustration: ‘Where can I actually find a safe and decent place to run around here?’
While there are massive global databases and apps available, they are rarely tailored to the specific needs of aircrews. Too often, the routes start in a city center miles away from the crew hotel, or they lead through areas that are best avoided after sunset.
After wasting too much precious rest time searching for suitable paths, the idea for BaseLegs was born.
The BaseLegs Route Briefing
My goal with BaseLegs is to provide a directory curated by pilots, for pilots and the entire aircrew community. Every single route in our database starts and ends directly at the most frequented crew hotels. BaseLegs doesn’t just provide GPS data; it provides a genuine ‘Route Briefing’: Is the path illuminated? What is the surface like? Is it safe?
With BaseLegs, I want to take the planning off your hands so you can focus on what truly matters: clearing your head and getting a great workout.
